Knowing what coverage you should get as a veteran is tough. Let’s look at one option, Medicare Advantage, and see if it’s a good choice for you.
Veterans Affairs (VA) is a helpful way for veterans to get coverage for the care they need. But it’s not always substantial, and often doesn’t cover the benefits or healthcare providers you need. VA is also not a guarantee—costs, benefits, and even the program itself may not always be available to you.
That’s why many veterans opt to have both Medicare and VA benefits. Both will contribute to your medical care, significantly reducing your costs compared to VA alone. You’ll also have Medicare as a backup in case your VA benefits end. And most veterans find that having coverage for non-VA facilities and doctors is a necessity.
But that’s just Original Medicare (Part A and Part B), what about Medicare Advantage (Part C)? Once you have Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage is an alternative plan you can enroll in to reduce your overall Medicare costs and provide some additional benefits.
While having Medicare Advantage alongside your VA benefits greatly boosts your coverage, their benefits do not overlap. VA only covers VA facilities, Medicare Advantage does not. But that’s a reason to use both options.
While you’ll have to pay your Original Medicare premium and deductibles, Medicare Advantage itself is affordable and makes your Original Medicare coverage more affordable by reducing your out-of-pocket costs.
Veterans enroll in both VA and Medicare Advantage for supplemental benefits. In addition to reducing the out-of-pocket costs of Original Medicare benefits, Advantage plans may also provide coverage for:
